John Singleton’s portrayal of festive problems in inner-city Los Angeles takes the figure of a tale of three friends growing up together ‘in the ‘hood.’ Half-brothers Doughboy and Ricky Baker are foils with respect to each other’s personality, presenting self-same different approaches to the tough lives they front. Ricky is the ‘All-American’ combatant, looking to win a football knowledge to USC and seeks salvation from one side sports, while ‘Dough’ succumbs to the severity, alcohol, and crime surrounding him in his environment, nevertheless maintains a strong sense of noble self-esteem and code of honor. Between these two is their friend Tre, who is propitious to have a father, ‘Furious’ Styles, to direct as an instructor him to have the strength of person to do what is right and to unceasingly take responsibility for his actions.
